Recursive Fish [02/11/2008]

My first recollection brings me riding up a rural road in the valley between two green mountains, not entirely unlike a road you’d find in the Adirondacks. I’m riding in this white hot rod that looks something like an old, long formula race car. Four wheels, larger ones in the back, little to no wheel wells, multiple exaust pipes coming out either side, and a cockpit for riding room. There was a gap between the back and where the rear axle actually was, and there was a sort of trunk space in that area more on the forward part of the body.

I pulled off the road and into a gas station on the right. I needed gas, so I stopped and filled up at the island. When I looked around, there were more than just one white hot rod like mine. In fact, one fellow was riding the same one, but tuned more for performance than mine was. I commented something about it as he turned over the engine and began leaving.

When I looked around, I was still at the island, but around it were walls like we were inside the actual store. Refrigerators lined the walls like your typical convenience store. Florescent lighting glowed from above.

My memory is a bit foggy on the middle part of this dream, but I recall that after I finished filling up, some guy was extremely impatient to get gas, and with his white mobile, he pushed mine out of the way only hard enough to scratch white paint against white paint. I was extremely annoyed with him and thought I should make an accident report and get my paint job fixed.

After the guy pushed me out of the way, I was stuck in the store area of this strange building and couldn’t leave because other similar vehicles blocked all the exits. I tried to get one guy to move out of the way and he took his pants off so he was bare-bottomed, and sat back on his bike.

I had put my helmet, a full bike helmet, in the trunk space in the back before I filled up. Then now I started my ride back up with a key that reminds me of a giant play-toy key. Then I went back to the trunk to get my helmet out. Someone else that I seemed friends with was looking through the stuff in the trunk. He pulled out a first a large case of mixed white-to-brown cubes, and I asked, “Are those my milk drops?” Apparently they were. Small cubic drops of milk and chocolate, the consistency I’m not sure of, but I think they were meant to be ice cream.

Next, I go in and pull out a package of orange soap bars that were sealed in plastic and appear to have gone bad and turned to a gel substance. I look at it a little more closely and I notice that the bar of soap had mutated partially into clear fish that were alive, the largest of which was half soap and half fish.

The fellow next to me looked at them closer and said that some fish were inside other fish. I asked to see it, and took it back for a close look. These clear fish, of which you could only see the very outline and their eyes and mouth were of all different sizes and were either orange or blue. Smaller fish were indeed floating around inside of other fish as if they were inside a smaller fish tank shaped like a fish.

I look at it and verify that the fish were so and then say, “that reminds me of a dream I had. I pulled into a bike shop...”

I start to recall the dream and realize that this was the same dream I was having right now. It was like my dream was self conscious of itself and I was going a level deeper into this dream. If I had stayed sleeping I would have replayed the dream again and reached this point and dreamt it again. It wasn’t like a recurring dream you’d have over and over during a night or several nights at a time, but actually more like a recursive programming call where you call the function from within itself with new information or new awareness.

When this recursion started to happen, I felt like I was going into a panic attack and could barely breath. I gasped a huge breath of air and woke up. In the mix of it all, I also recall saying or thinking, “God must have wanted me to remember this dream.”
